28 S, MARCH FOR THE DECRIMINALIZATION OF ABORTION, Quito - Ecuador. 2024 In Ecuador, decriminalization of abortion has advanced, but still faces significant challenges. Until 2021, abortion was illegal in almost all circumstances. In April 2021, Ecuador's Constitutional Court decriminalized abortion in cases of rape, recognizing the need to expand women's reproductive rights in the country thanks to all the work of activists like Surkuna. Despite this historic decision, the implementation of this decriminalization has been slow and met with political and social resistance. In 2022, the law regulating access to abortion in cases of rape was approved, establishing a term of up to 12 weeks of gestation for women in general, and up to 18 weeks for girls, adolescents, indigenous women and women from rural areas, who face more barriers to access medical care. However, in Ecuador there continues to be strong opposition from conservative sectors, especially religious and political groups that have tried to limit access to abortion services. This creates barriers for women, including lack of access to clear information, conscientious objection by health personnel, and social stigmatization and in some cases even imprisonment.
