John Hayward (l) and Stephen Taylor using hypodermic syringes to apply the adhesive when bonding stained glass to plate glass for one of the panels of the huge lantern they are making for Blackburn Cathedral, Lancashire. They are working in a converted stable at Mr Hayward's home at Prickloves Farmhouse, Bletchingley, Surrey. John, originally a furniture designer but now concentrating on stained glass, designed the lantern, which will contain almost 1, 000 square feet of stained glass based on an abstract theme. In the wall in the background is a plan drawing of the 30ft steel figure of Christ which is also John's work and is already installed in the Cathedral. The Lantern, weighing over two tons, is to be illuminated from the inside and at night will be seen as 'a blaze of colour from all parts of the city'. John Hayward has also designed a huge steel corona, weighing four tons, to be suspended over the High Altar.
