The move came 24 hours after Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams said he had asked the IRA to disarm and prevent the collapse of the Good Friday Agreement. The general has had a relentless series of meetings with politicians of all descriptions, with Government officials and representatives of the paramilitaries in the four years that he has been in charge of removing the gun and bomb from Irish politics.
