The island of Delos, mykonos, Greece
Altre informazioni:
The island of Delos near Mykonos, near the centre of the Cyclades archipelago, is one of the most important mythological, historical and archaeological sites in Greece. In 1872 the French archaeological school in Athens systematic began excavations, which put the great religious and cultural significance of the island in full daylight. Today, Delos with its 50 acres of excavations is one of the main tourist attractions of Greece. The excavations in the island are among the most extensive in the Mediterranean and many of the artifacts found are on display at the Archaeological Museum of Delos and the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. Delos had a position as a holy sanctuary for a millennium before Olympian Greek mythology made it the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. Established as a culture centre, Delos had an importance that its natural resources could never have offered. Now it has no hotels, no restaurants and no inhabitants. You can only visit it on a daytrip. In the evening it is 'closed'.
