The Rotunda (or Rotonda in Greek) landmark, informally called the Church of the Rotunda, also known as Rotunda of Saint George or Agios Georgios church, was built on order of the Tetrarch Galerious and it was thought to have intended it to be his mausoleum. It is a 4th-century monument and popular meeting point on Gounari Str., in the heart of Thessalonica. It is neighboring with the Arch of Galerius (Triumphal gate) monument also known as Kamara, which was built to emphasize the power of the Tetrarch Galerius. The gateway was erected in 303AD to celebrate the Roman Emperor's victory over Persians. Long after Galerius's death, the Emperor Constantine I (1st) converted Rotunda into a Christian church in 326AD, decorated with mosaics of saints and other artistic depictions. When the Ottomans took over the city, it was converted into the Suleyman Hortaji Effendi mosque, and a minaret was post added to the structure. During the Balkan War, Greeks took the city and the Orthodox church converted the structure into a church, leaving the minaret. The building is now restored and belongs to the Unesco World Heritage monuments list. The entrance to the site was free to visitors until Spring 2016.
