Set in rural peace and tranquillity of the New Forest National Park, lies the idyllic location for a nursing care home. Nestled away and on the outskirts of the hamlet of Linford, situated along an uphill driveway away from the rest of the world’s worries sounds like it would have been the perfect way to rest and relax in the winter of anyone’s life. Or so you would think. Reminiscent of an old holiday camp site of a now bygone era it appears to display an Art Deco emergence. The prefabricated look, offers simple straight lines, flat roofs and curves along with large practical and functional windows which lead to airy balconies, providing maximum light for the original usage, thus giving away its first identity. Built during 1940s, and known as Linford Hospital, it must have provided a great deal to the war effort but afterwards was mothballed and lay empty for many years. Not much is known about the building until it made national news at the end of July 2010. By this time it had become a place of care within the private sector and officially called Linford Park Nursing Home. Making headlines for the wrong reasons saw the 34 vulnerable residents moved to alternative accommodation as the UK Border Agency officials swooped following a tip off. The site was closed as 13 illegal immigrants were found to be working there. The residents were being neglected which led to 3 arrests by those in charge with further one for theft. Due to its isolated location, the site has remained largely untouched since the incident. Most of the site is still in good condition but decay has set in within some parts adding to a wave of melancholy which now greets you as you now enter. Some of the resident’s photographs and clothes can still be found within, creating a connection with the past. Like all abandoned and disused buildings, a sense of eeriness can emerge but on this occasion it felt very calm and tranquil. Perhaps that is down to its tranquil settings.
