Panorama of Victoria Square, Bolton formed from two images digitally stitched together. The town's main war memorial is central to the image. The memorial was erected in 1928 to commemorate the dead of the first world war. Inscriptions to mark the second world war were added later. The sculpted bronze figures on either side of the memorial arch, by Lancashire sculptor Walter Marsden (1882-1969), were added in 1933. The sculpture to the left is “Peace Restraining War”, which features a seated female figure, representing Peace, restraining the arms of a kneeling male warrior who represents War. On the other side “Peace seeing the Horrors of War” depicts the figure of Peace raising her hands as the warrior, now dead, lies in her lap). The monument is a Grade II listed structure. This image has no model or property releases assigned to it and is intended for editorial only use. If you want to use the image commercially, you might also need to seek permission from any people depicted and/or the owners of any property, estate, trademark or brand shown.
