Located 125km southwest of Tehran, Qom (Ghom), is the 8th largest city in Iran with a population of over 1 million. It is considered holy by Shia Islam, as it is the site of the shrine of Fatima Masumeh, sister of Imam Reza. The city is the largest center for Shia scholarship in the world; it is also a significant destination of pilgrimage. Qom is also famous for a brittle toffee called Sohan which is considered a souvenir of the city. The Shrine of Fatima Masumeh makes Qom be considered by Shia Muslims as the second most sacred city in Iran after Mashhad. Fatima Masumeh was the sister of the eighth Imam Reza and the daughter of the seventh Imam Musa al-Kadhim. In Shia Islam, women are often revered as saints if they are close relatives to one of the Twelver Imams. Fatima Masumeh is therefore honored as a saint, and her shrine in Qom is considered one of the most significant Shia shrines in Iran. Every year, thousands of Shia Muslims travel to Qom to honor Fatima Masumeh and ask her for blessings.
