The Taj Mahal was built in the mid-17th century by the Mughal emperor Shah Jehan as a mausoleum for his queen Mumtaz Mahal. It was designed by a team of architects led by Ustad Ahmad Lahauri who used the purest of translucent white marble for its construction, encrusted the inside walls with precious and semi-precious stones and placed a gold finial at the peak. Qur’anic passages were inlaid on the walls in black marble with calligraphy by the Persian artist Amanat Khan Shirazi . The mausoleum is surrounded by a garden and there is also a mosque in the complex. Mughal architecture is said to have reached its pinnacle of achievement in the Taj Mahal at Agra which is considered one of the wonders of the world and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The engraving shows a view of the Taj Mahal complex from across the River Jumna (Yumana). The picture was drawn by S Prout and engraved by Robert Wallis
