Giandomenico Tiepolo (1727-1804). The Apotheosis of Hercules. ca. 1765. Oil on canvas. 101.3 x 85.5 cm. Giandomenico Tiepolo was an Italian Rococo painter, printmaker and draughtsman belonging to the 18th century Venetian School. He studied under his father, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, with whom he worked on numerous projects throughout his life. He painted religious, historical and genre compositions, including scenes from the popular theatre commedia dell’arte. The Apotheosis of Hercules oval painting depicts the mythological deification episode described in The Metamorphoses by Ovid, in which the Greek hero rises to Olympus as he dies. The scene shows a triumphal chariot carried by centaurs transporting Hercules into the realms of heaven while a winged female figure is about to crown him. Tiepolo depicts the god with his attributes, namely the Nemean lion skin and the club.
