Evenon roads of considerable mileage with several hundredbridges, the engineer of maintenance of way is indirect charge of the bridges and he usually calls in aconsulting bridge engineer when confronted with un-usual bridge problems such as strengthening for heavierloads, rebuilding for double tracking and periodic expertinspection, the latter being required by law in severalstates. The first requirement in connection with well-orderedbridge maintenance is an adequate record of the numberand type of structures over which the maintenanceengineer has charge. The simplest way to obtain this, if not on hand, is to start afresh and have a compre-hensive examination of all bridges made by an engineer.
