Imagine an ancient city, with structures hundreds of years old, teeming with life. Now imagine this city is fuchsia-pink and underwater, where the buildings are actually living structures hundreds of years old. These pink cities are right on our doorstep ? maerl beds found across the UK and they support a myriad of fish species, store carbon and create bright white beaches. In this talk, Heidi Burdett will introduce us to these beautiful cities, highlight the pressures human activity is placing on these ecosystems, their resilience against these challenges, and what we can do to safeguard their future. Heidi Burdett is an expert in coastal marine science, seeking to understand the role of coastal marine ecosystems in the recycling of carbon around the world. Heidi is a keen SCUBA diver and swimmer, always looking for the next opportunity to get her toes in the water. Heidi loves sharing her passion for science with the public, highlighting the importance of protecting our oceans, and in 2018, was the recipient of the Charles Lyell award for environmental science from the British Science Association.
