The Lapeyre Automatic Shrimp Peeling Machine is displayed at the Maritime and Seafood Industry Museum, May 29, 2021, in Biloxi, Mississippi. The machine was invented in 1943 by James Martial Lapeyre of Houma, Louisiana. Lapeyre’s machine could peel 1, 000 pounds of shrimp per hour, doing the work of 30-150 people peeling by hand, revolutionizing the shrimp processing industry. He went on to form Laitram Machinery, which owns more than 900 patents. The Maritime & Seafood Industry Museum was established in 1986 to preserve the history and heritage of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The museum features exhibits on shrimping, oystering, fishing, coastal habitat, shipbuilding, marine blacksmithing, and other coastal subjects. The original museum was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 but was rebuilt and reopened in 2014. (Photo by Carmen K. SissonCloudybright)
