Statues in niches on the W face of the C15th W tower of Holy Trinity Church, St Austell, Cornwall, England, UK. A pyramid arrangement with the Trinity at the top, the Annunciation in the middle (Virgin Mary on R, Angel Gabriel on L) & the risen Christ between two saints at the bottom. There are niches with statues on all four faces of the second stage of the three-stage tower. Built 1478-87, faced with Pentewen stone ashlar, it is one of the finest church towers in Cornwall. String courses divide the stages, the parapet string is pierced by carved gargoyles & beasts project from the walls. Pinnacled buttresses are offset from the corners. Octagonal corners on the third stage rise to crocketted pinnacles above the embattled parapet. St Austell (Austol, Austolus) was a C6th priest, a disciple of his godfather St Mewan who he followed from Wales to Cornwall & then to Brittany. They were companions of St Samson in Cornwall & Brittany.
