Avro Lancaster PA474 flying overhead against a clear blue sky at the Farnborough Airshow 2006 . PA474 is part of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight BBMF and one of only two Lancasters remaining in airworthy condition out of the 7377 that were built the other being in Canada . Built in Chester in mid 1945 this aircraft was used for Photographic Reconnaissance duties with 82 Squadron in East and South Africa . On return to England it became a pilotless drone before finding its way to the RAF Museum at Hendon . It was used in the films Operation Crossbow and The Guns of Navarone before being restored for the Battle of Britain Flight in November 1973. It was painted up as the Lancaster III EE176 QRM nicknamed Mickey the Moocher of 61 Squadron 35 This had been a Lancaster centurion an aircraft that flew and survived in excess of 100 missions before being scrapped after the War . The Avro Lancaster was a development of the engine failure prone twin engine Manchester . The prototype Lancaster first flew on 9 January 1941 and first deployed in 1942 with 44 RAF squadron . It became the most used British heavy bomber of World War Two WWII flying over 156000 missions . The Lancaster had a rectangular fuselage a mid set wing and twin tail fins and rudders and a Martin upper turret with two 50 calibre guns . It was able to carry very heavy bombs and bulky special weapons .With modifications to the bomb bay even 10000 kg bombs were carried . Only a few aircraft were capable of carrying the 12000 lb Tallboy and the 22000 lb Grand Slam bombs .
