Berlin, Mitte, Unter den Linden. State Opera House - Old historic Neo-classical building newly re-opened after reconstruction. The Opera house is home of German Opera company and the Staatskapelle Berlin orchestra. The Opera House commissioned by King Frederick II of Prussia in 1741 and opened 1742 as the Court Opera House. It was destroyed by fire in 1843 but reconstructed and it re-opened as the Royal Opera House in 1849. After the collapse of the German Empire in 1918 the name was changed to the Staatsoper Unter den Linden and the Königliche Kapelle became Kapelle der Staatsoper. During the Nazi Years many musicians of Jewish origin were forced to flee but the Opera House remained open with a period of closure after being bombed in 1941.The building was once again destroyed by fire in 1945, reconstructed and re-opened in 1955. The Berlin State Opera has been home to many famous musicians and conductors and in 2002 Daniel Barenboim was appointed ‘conductor for life’. Between 2009 and 2017 the building underwent extensive renovation and extension. The scaffolding has now been removed and the beautifully restored building has been revealed.
