Sarah-Marie Martin and Nick Brophy are both 36 years old. They got married on Nov. 1, 2003. They live in Manhattan, New York City, the U.S. In 2006, they decided to adopt a baby and chose the Gladney Center for Adoption and its Ethiopia program. They adopted Ashenafi (Ash) in March 2007, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Martin Ashenafi (Ash) Brophy was born on or around Sept. 10, 2006, in Addis Ababa. His 13-year old birth mother had approached the Gladney Center for Adoption to inquire about finding him a home. After going through the government required procedures, she put him up for adoption. When in Ethiopia picking up Ash, Sarah and Nick met an adorable girl named Eyerusalem ( Eyerus ) Kaye Demoz at the Kechene orphanage in Addis Ababa. They loved her instantly. They proceeded with another adoption and brought Eyerus home on the Christmas Day 2007. Eyerus and Ash are best friends. They are happy and healthy. Eyerus is in sixth grade at a local church school. She likes arts and plays soccer on the weekends. She has many friends and loves to do artwork. Ash is three years old in a nursery school. He has a lot of friends and plays soccer and gymnastics. He is absolutely smart and can read a little. Both of the two children are thriving in America. Sarah and Nick said it is important that they respect and embrace the children s Ethiopian heritage. Eyerus speaks Amharic (the Ethiopian language) with her babysitter every day. They are teaching Ash to speak Amharic. Sometimes the family attend Ethiopian Orthodox church services, and celebrate major Ethiopian holidays. Sarah and Nick are currently pursuing their third Ethiopian adoption through Gladney and expect to bring home a baby in the fall of 2010.
