On a bullet train traveling from Beijing to Tianjin, an American blonde chowed down on a hamburger and fries. She had to polish off her dinner within the 30-minute s journey. Upon arrival she had to rush through the train station to make it over to the Tianjin TV headquarters for the filming of the finale of the foreign student Mandarin competition; where she was invited to be a judge. Her name is Elyse Ribbons, and while she is known for her good command of Mandarin, the Tianjin TV director invited her not for her language skills but her mastery of drama. Elyse s job was to judge the contestants performance techniques during the competition. who are acquainted with Elyse also know about her Cheeky Monkey Theater . The troupe features actors of various nationalities, all of whom are dubbed as monkeys such as Masked Monkey, Sunny Monkey and of course the Cheeky Monkey herself, Elyse. I like monkeys for their active and playful nature. Besides, I was born in 1980: the year of Monkey in the Chinese Zodiac. Since 2006, when Cheeky Monkey Theater produced their first show, they have created many dramas like I Heart Beijing , Kung Pao Shakespeare , and Green Eyes on Chinese . These works were performed in English or Chinese, but mixed with Chinglish words. These humorous plays utilize the comic undertones between the confrontation and cooperation of Chinese and Western cultures. The audience finds themselves challenged by and laughing along with these cultural idiosyncrasies as they play out on stage.
