There has been a palace belonging to the Bishops of Lincoln on this site since the 12th century but the oldest structures here now date from about 1475. These are the brick built great tower, inner gatehouse and a section of crenellated wall. Between 1248 and 1619, 5 English kings have stayed here plus the Prince Regent in 1814. 49 year old King Henry VIII stayed with his teenage wife, Catherine Howard during a Royal progress in 1541. The following year she was executed for acts of adultery committed during the progress. Buckden Towers is however most strongly associated with Henry's first wife, Catherine of Aragon, who had an enforced stay here from July 1533 to May 1534 following her divorce.
