Chamber Pot Opera - performance extract Assembly Hall Bathrooms - meet in the courtyard at the Assembly Halls Assembly Hall, Bathroom, Mound Place, EH1 2LU Fresh from a SELL OUT season at the Queen Victoria Building in Sydney, Australia, and the Adelaide Fringe, Bontom is bringing Chamber Pot Opera to the Assembly Hall Bathrooms for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. This intimate production tells the story of three women who meet in a bathroom. One is in an abusive relationship, another is terrified that she came on too strong on a date, and the third has just been promoted through the glass ceiling to the top job. Together they sing of shared histories, traumas and fantasies. Chamber Pot Opera grants these women the safe space to express themselves. Chamber Pot Opera features a talented team of singers and creatives from Australia’s National Institute Of Dramatic Art (NIDA) and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Originally performed in Sydney in November 2016, this production has toured to the Adelaide Fringe, where it was awarded a High Commended Award in the Theatre Category. Director and co-creator, Clemence Williams, says that she has “always been interested in exploring the role that women play in opera – which are so often limited to the ‘bitches, witches and breeches’ roles.” Dramaturg Thomas De Angelis says “This opera is about bringing the beautiful music of Puccini, Mozart, and Bizet to new audiences in an exciting and intimate way – there’s a hunger for new opera out there, and this show feeds it!” The bathroom fits a very small audience, offering a unique and intimate experience, performed by Australia’s next generation of opera performers and creators. Chamber Pot Opera is created by Keiren Brandt-Sawdy, Thomas De Angelis and Clemence Williams. “Chamber Pot Opera makes opera accessible, celebrates the power women can have when they choose to support each other, and forces audiences to rethink their opinions of performance spaces.” Broadway World; 2
