2018_01_23 Kowop, Baragoi district, Samburu County, Kenya. The area of Kowop is a conflict zone. Turkana, Pokot and Samburu tribes share this ongoing violent conflict since years. All tribes are nomadic pastoralist and depend on their livestock and their community to survive in the arid and semi-arid lands of Kenya. The conflicts started with Cattle-rustling and livestock raiding. One tribe steals from the other, then that tribe takes revenge. Over the years, these conflicts grew stronger and more violent. A good witness of this is the small town of Kowop. Now abandoned and destroyed, it was built only a few years ago with schools and churches and the help of missionaries to help the people there. The buildings are fairly new, but roofs are destroyed and loose and useful materials have been stolen. None of the tribes dare to go back there, as they fear to be immediately killed by the other tribes. This fear is real, this shows also the attack of 107 policemen in Suguta Valley in 2012. The policemen tried to get back stolen cattle to the Samburu tribes while being attacked by Turkana tribes in ambush. 42 policemen were killed, 38 injured.
