With fewer Albion cattle than there are Giant Pandas the birth of a heifer calf called Cherry yesterday (Sunday 2nd August) at Cotswold Farm Park is a step in the right direction. The historic breed originally from Derbyshire has been in decline since the 1960s and numbers had dipped below 150 breeding females before being recognised as critically rare by the Rare Breed Survival Trust last year. Thanks to a small number of dedicated breeders the breed survived in pockets around the country. BBC Countryfile presenter Adam Henson purchased 7 cows and a bull for his Cotswold Farm Park near Cheltenham in March 2018 now has a herd of 19 with Cherry being the latest new arrival. Adam said "We bought them two years ago before they were recognised by the RBST as a rare breed from a sale down in Devon. We heard about the Albions being sold but thought they were extinct so rushed down to buy them in the hope that they really were Albions and that the RBST could do the research to see if the breed still existed which they have since done."
