Western grebes are impressive fish catchers. There is a healthy population of them on Eagle Lake in Lassen County, California, USA. Not coincidental is the healthy population of tui chub that inhabit the lake. These generally minnow sized fish keep quite a few of Eagle Lake’s residents well fed, including the rainbow trout which have long been targeted by anglers from far and near. In rare cases the chubs can get up to 18 inches but anything in the 6 or 8 inch category is getting above average. Therefore, this was quite the feast of a breakfast for one of this pair of grebes. I’m not sure if this is the male or the female indulging in the meal. Once mated, males will very often feed the females and these two got very close to each other after the catch was made but I couldn’t clearly see if a “hand off” took place or not.
