Altre informazioni:
Back side detail of the 1870s Te Puawai o Te Arawa, the Māori pātaka or raised storehouse at at the Auckland War Memorial Museum, New Zealand. Tribal leader Te Pōkiha Taranui commissioned carver Wero Tāroi and others of the Ngāti Tarāwhai iwi of Te Arawa to build and carve the pātaka in the 1870s. The pātaka originally stood at Maketū in the Bay of Plenty. The traditional Māori storehouse was used to keep preserved food such as fish, birds, and seeds safe from kiore or Pacific rats. Apart from the use as a storehouse, the pātaka was intended to symbolize the power and status of Te Pōkiha. The carved ancestral figures illustrate Te Pōkiha genealogy and notable ancestors. The storehouse was carved from totara and painted red, with black panels. Most carved figures have paua shell inset eyes. The large figure over the front door is Tama-te-Kapua, the captain of the Arawa canoe which finally beached at Maketū. The tekoteko on the roof at the front is Te Tākinga, descendent of Tama-te-Kapua and an ancestor of Te Pōkiha. The tekoteko at the rear is Awunui, a son of Te Tākinga.
