Used to guard the city from marauding parties, Amber fort is large and impressive, with narrow passages and staircases that can be defended by a single swordsman. Ridged ramps allow the cavalry to move within the fortifications. The fort is surrounded by high walls that cannot be easily scaled and windows are placed high up. Pillaged of its wealth throughout its long history, the Amber Fort's interiors were once adorned with a wealth of ornamental art work, mirrors and frescos. This was where the women, bound by purdah, spent most of their time. The Amber Fort is now a popular tourist destination for both Indians and foreigners.
