Caption: Kangding, Sichuan, China - May 2002. A silk clad monk dancing during the Sakyamuni Masked Dance Festival in Kandging, or Dartsendo to the Tibetans, the former Tibetan Kingdom of Kham.The festival, held annualy, is celebrated in honour of Historical Buddha's birthday. Monks, depicting dragons and other worldly beasts, perform tantric danced aimed to appease the spirits and clean society of bad karma. Dressed in the finest silk brocades and infront of devotees, they dance to the beat of horns and drums that sound throughout the monastery's courtyard.
