Cw 7299 Branch removing from the tree down across canal 19.8.2020. Over the night of Monday the 17th and Tuesday 18th a large oak tree fell across the Leeds and Liverpool canal in the Douglas Valley in West Lancashire. There had been heavy spells of rain in the last few days that may have affected the stability of the tree that fell between bridges 39 and 40 on the canal. The tree blocked the canal but not the towpath and meant about 12 boats had gathered along the canal before contractors for the Canal and River Trust came and started to remove the tree. The contractors got organised with one in a dingy on the canal using a chain saw to cut the branches off. They had a wire rope installed over the branch of another tree on the towpath side of the canal, attached to a quad bike. This was tied to the branches and the branches lifted out by driving the quad away down the towing path. It worked well. By mid afternoon on Wednesday the 19th enough of the tree had been removed to enable the boats to just get through the gap alongside the towpath. The first few boats need some assistance from the contractor’s lads, boat crews and the contractor’s quad bike. 19.8.20.
