--FILE--Cartons of Mengniu pure milk are displayed for sale in a supermarket in Shanghai, China, 13 April 2013. Up to 60% of the milk sold in China is made from milk powder and contains several different types of artificial additives, according the deputy director of a Chinese diary association. Wei Ronglu, the deputy chief of a diary association, made the controversial remarks during a recent interview with the Beijing-based China Business Journal, a newspaper run by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. During the interview, Wei said the pure milk marketed in China is supposed to mean fresh cows milk without additives. But in the Chinese market, 90% of pure milk is made with milk powder and contains harmful flavorings and food additives, he said. As pure milk dominates Chinas liquid milk market with a share of 75%, this means around 60% of all liquid milk sold in China is made with milk powder. Between 2005 and 2008, Chinas milk powder exports have lingered between 30, 000 tonnes and 90, 000 tonnes, but suddenly increased to 245, 000 tonnes in 2009, Wei said. Last year, China imported around 60, 000 tonnes of milk powder, and this year total milk powder imports are expected to exceed 70, 000 tonnes, representing nearly a 10-fold increase in just a few years, he added.
