The authorities were anointing Shanghai as the countrys financial center and Hong Kong, the financial metropolis on Chinas southern coast, seemed sure to lose out. Shanghai is indeed working hard to transform itself into the regions New York. New skyscrapers continue to rise, meant to be the Asian headquarters for international banks.
