Rainforest at the foot of Mount Tangkoko and Mount Duasudara (Dua Saudara) in North Sulawesi, Indonesia. Southeast Asia's tropical rainforests are one of the world's three largest systems that are the lungs of the earth, along with the Amazon and Congo River Basin. However, according to Jennifer Forgesen in her article published on Time on October 18, 2022, Southeast Asia's rainforest are now a net source or carbon emissions due to fires, clearing for plantations, and peat soil drainage. Apart from that, Tangkoko forest currently suffers from temperature increase by up to 0.2 degree Celsius per year, as reported by a team of primatologists led by Marine Joly after a long-time research, adding that the overall fruit abundance is also decreased. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) says that rising temperatures have led to ecological, behavioral, and physiological changes in wildlife species and biodiversity.
