Now a popular tourist destination, Pickering (England, GB, UK) is an ancient, market town, situated in Ryedale between the North Yorkshire towns of Scarborough, Whitby, Helmsley and Malton. It is the southern terminus of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and sits on the border of the North York Moors National Park. It is therefore often referred to as, 'The Gateway to the Moors.' This notice board in the town centre, tells us that there is a lively community here with plenty of events being held. The WI also plays a part in this. The Women's Institute has become the largest voluntary women's organisation in the UK and it celebrated its centenary in 2015. Currently there are 212, 000 members in over 6, 300 WIs. The WI encourages women to take part in a wide variety of activities and to campaign on issues that matter to them and their communities.
