Australian Aboriginal singer & songwriter, Archie Roach, performing at the Bassendean Family Day in Western Australia, NAIDOC week 2011. Born in 1956 in Mooroopna, Victoria, Roach and his siblings became part of the 'Stolen Generation' when they were forcibly removed as children from their family. After time with a foster family - where he learned to play guitar - Roach lived on the streets of Sydney and battled alcholism. Eventually finding solace in music, his song 'Took The Children Away' rocketed Roach to National stardom. ARIA awards, a Human Rights Achievement Award and more followed. Roach recorded several more award winning albums throughout the 1990s and performed alongside international stars. His wife, Ruby Hunter, passed away in February 2010, while Roach suffered a stroke in late 2010. He performs live today and is regarded as a living legend and an icon by indigenous Australians.
