Castlefield Canal Basin arm at Potato Wharf, towards Great Northern Viaduct, Manchester, UK
Altre informazioni:
The Canal Basin at Castlefield, Manchester, is crossed by four large railway viaducts. The southern viaduct in the group (background) is the red brick viaduct of the Manchester South Junction and Altrincham Railway built in 1849. A 31.9 m span cast iron bridge takes the viaduct across the basin. In the mid-distance rises the tubular steel Great Northern Viaduct, dating to 1894, and now disused. The 1877 red brick wrought iron truss girder Cornbrook Viaduct (between the two and next to the Great Northern) was deemed to be in better condition than the Great Northern Viaduct, so was chosen for refurbishment in 1990-91 and is currently used by Metrolink trams going to Altincham. A portrait shot from Potato Wharf towards the Great Northern Viaduct. In the far background, from Slate Wharf to Catalan Square, stands the 40m span Merchants' Footbridge, from Slate Wharf (right side view) to Catalan Square, is a 3m wide deck suspended by 13 hangers from steel arches. It is part of the Castelfield Heritage Park, turning an industrial canal basin into a tourist attraction.
