Photograph by David Coleman. The Commandant's Own, officially titled the United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps, is a premier musical unit of the United States Marine Corps. Their performance at the Sunset Parade showcases exceptional musicianship and military precision. This elite ensemble, comprising approximately 80 Marine musicians, performs a diverse repertoire including traditional marches, patriotic selections, and contemporary pieces. The Sunset Parade, held weekly on Tuesday evenings during summer months, takes place at the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia, just across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. The memorial, often referred to as the Iwo Jima Memorial, is based on the famous photograph by Joe Rosenthal depicting six Marines raising the American flag on Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II. Designed by sculptor Felix de Weldon, the 32-foot-tall bronze figures stand on a granite base, with the 60-foot bronze flagpole as a striking focal point. The memorial honors all U.S. Marines who have given their lives in defense of the United States since 1775. The Sunset Parade began in 1956, two years after the memorial's dedication, and has since become a cherished tradition. The event typically includes performances by The Commandant's Own and the Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon. Set against the backdrop of the nation's capital, with views of the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial in the distance, the Sunset Parade offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience military music and precision while honoring the service and sacrifice of American military personnel.
