The picturesque village of Dunmore East, situated at the entrance to Waterford Harbour has long been a fishing port, with a fleet of fifty fishing boats reportedly working out of there as far back as 1776. In 1812 a decision was made to create a new landing facility designed by the Scottish engineer Alexander Nimmo, to accommodate sailing ships carrying the Royal Mail between Ireland and England. The work on the new harbour included a newly constructed quay terminated with an elegant lighthouse in the unusual form of a Doric column with fluted detailing to enhance its architectural style. Twenty five years later the harbour began to silt up and with the arrival of steamships the winding River Suir could now be negotiated with ease, resulting in the packet station being transferred to Waterford City. With the loss of the intended shipping, Dunmore East’s future could have been in jeopardy, but the harbour gradually became an important fishing port. Today it’s a National Fishery Harbour, second only to Killybegs in County Donegal.
