METROPOLITAN CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE KING Situated in Hope St, Liverpool and affectionately known as “Paddy’s Wigwam”. The crypt of the Cathedral was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, although the main Cathedral architect was Sir Fredrick Gibberd, who was the winner of a competition in 1960 instigated by Cardinal Heenan to bring to reality Archbishop Downey‘s dream slogan ‘A Cathedral in our time’. Architects from all over the world were invited to design a cathedral which would relate to the existing Crypt, be capable of construction within five years , and cost no more than 1 million pounds for the shell, and most important of all express the new spirit of the liturgy then being radically reformulated by the Second Vatican Council. Building began in October 1962. Less than five years later, on the feast of Pentecost, 14th May 1967 the completed Cathedral was consecrated.
