Altre informazioni:
Salt Lake Temple is the centrepiece of the ten acres (four hectares) Temple Square in Salt Lake City. A temple recommend is required to enter, so there are no public tours inside the Temple. Having a height of 68 metres (222 feet), the Temple is the largest LDS church by floor area (23, 505.9 square metres or 253, 015 square feet). The Salt Lake Temple was dedicated in 1893, taking forty years to complete. It was the fourth temple built since the Mormon exodus from Nauvoo, Illinois, in 1846, after the death of Joseph Smith in 1844 and continuing violence from neighbouring non-Mormons. Most of the refugees, led by Brigham Young, migrated to the mountain-enclosed Great Salt Lake Valley. Cyrus Dallin's statue of the Angel Moroni top the tall central spire on the east side of the Temple. The trumpet in the Angel's right hand symbolises the spreading of the gospel and the Second Coming of Christ. The statue of Joseph and Emma Smith, outside the LDS Church Administration Building, is by the sculptor, Florence Peterson Hansen. The statue bears the inscription 'All I have to give to the poor, I shall give to this Society', taken from the minutes of the Female Relief Society of Nauvoo, March 17, 1842. The Female Relief Society was an auxiliary organisation of the LDS Church, for helping the poor, including Native Americans in the environs of Salt Lake City. Joseph Smith published the Book of Mormon in 1830. He was killed by a mob storming the jail, in which he was being held, at Carthage, Illinois, June 27, 1844. His first wife, Emma Smith, stayed in Nauvoo and re-married a close friend and non-Mormon, Major Lewis C. Bidamon. Emma died in Nauvoo, Illinois, April 30, 1879, aged 74.Sunset portrait of the Joseph and Emma Smith Statue towards the east side of the Salt Lake Temple.
