London Cemetery and Extension, Longueval is the third largest British military cemetery on the Somme Battlefields. 3, 873 casualties are buried here of those 3, 114 are unidentified. The cemetery was started in September 1916. 47 casualties serving with 47th (London) Division were buried here in a shell hole. After this date those buried here are mainly from the 47th (London) Division. By the end of the war in November 1918 there were 101 burials in the cemetery. The extension was created after the Armistice, British burials were brought here from surrounding fields and woods. All were officers and men killed in fighting in the area. There are also 165 British servicemen from the second World War buried here. Previously buried in the local area in village churchyard cemeteries or in graves where they fell. London Cemetery was designed after the first World War by Sir Herbert Baker. After the second World War some design and construction work was carried out by Austin Bloomfield.
