Library filer dated 15/2/2000 of Barclays Chief Executive Matthew Barrett (left) and the bank's Chairman Peter Middleton whose salaries for last year are at the centre of controversy. It has emerged Thursday March 30, 2000 that Middleton quadrupled his salary last year to 1.76 million and its new chief executive earned 1.3 million for only three months' work. Chairman Sir Peter Middleton received a salary and fees of 947, 000, a cash bonus of 800, 000, benefits of 4, 000 and an 8, 000 profit share. Meanwhile, Canadian Matthew Barrett, who joined as chief executive last October, saw his pay packet boosted by a 638, 000 cash bonus. During the year, the group announced plans to axe 7, 500 jobs.
