The United Kingdom 1p and 2p coins (made of bronze) were introduced in 1971. The first copper-plated steel coins were struck in 1992. The reason for this change was the increase in the price of metals on the world markets. The coins have a mild steel core and are electroplated with copper - consequently they are magnetic. The 1p and 2p coins are legal tender for amounts up to 20p. First issued in 1982, the 20 pence coin is made of cupro-nickel and is seven sided (an equilateral curve heptagon). The 20p coin is legal tender for amounts up to £10. In 1983 the one pound coin was introduced. It is made of nickel-brass and to make it easy to identify, the £1 coin is thicker than other coins while the 'yellow' colour allows it to stand out from the cupro-nickel 'silver' coins in circulation. The £1 coin is legal tender for any amount. The bi-colour £2 coin, was introduced in 1998. The outer metal is nickel-brass, while the inner is cupro-nickel. The £2 coin is legal tender for any amount.
