Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) was a Genoese navigator and explorer. In this illustration, he is depicted in the Spanish court of Ferdinand and Isabella (also spelled Isabelle and Isabel), presenting his plans to the royal couple and other dignitaries for a trip west across the Atlantic Ocean to the Indies. After being granted an audience with Isabella, she referred his request to committee. Years passed, and finally, in 1492, Ferdinand and Isabella agreed to help fund the voyage. Italian financiers funded the rest. Columbus set sail on August 3, 1492, reaching the New World in October.
