This illustration from the work "Americae partes published in Frankfurt am Mainz in 1590" depicts the story told by the Italian Girolamo Benzoni about Columbus dining with Spanish nobles. Some of the nobles remarked that even if Columbus had not discovered the Indies others would have, as there were plenty of others who had the knowledge to do so. In reply, Columbus asked the nobles to make an egg stand on one end. When none could do so, he took the egg tapped it slightly to make a crack and then stood it on one end, saying that once something had been accomplished anyone else would know how to do it.
