A de Havilland DH89 Dragon Rapide (known as a Dominie in military service) sits on the airfield at Duxford in Cambridgeshire, England. The silver DH89 carries RAF markings and is parked on the grass in the late afternoon sunshine. The type was designed as a short-haul commercial passenger aircraft capable of carrying six to eight passengers at a maximum speed of around 160mph. DH89s first entered service in 1934 and sold well both in Britain and abroad. Production ceased in 1946 after a production run of 727 examples. Many British civilian DH86s were impressed into military service in World War 2 where they were used not only for passenger transport but for radio and navigation training and as air ambulances. Many more were manufactured for the government specifically for military use including this actual aircraft in 1943. The Royal Navy still operated 14 examples in 1960, not finally phasing them out until 1963. This aircraft is still earning its keep providing pleasure flights.
