Increasing energy consumption led to the development of heat-engines, which provided far more power. Today we have at our disposal a great variety of engines fulfilling many purposes. They usually work out of sight at the back of a refrigerator, under the bonnet of a car, in a power station of a reservoir. Technically speaking, they are energy converters; historically, they have evolutionized our lives. Our aim is to show you the most important types of engine. If you follow the suggested tour you will come in approximately historical order to: Muscle-powered machines, water wheels and wind wheels, piston steam engines, water turbines, steam turbines, internal combustion engines and electric motors, and finally gas turbines.
