Pingyao, in central Shanxi province in China is the most preserved ancient city in the world. It is largely undeveloped and was the centre of banking and finance in ancient times. It is now on the tourist trail and has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Centre. The city walls are completely intact and most impressive. It is possible to walk around the entire city walls and view the various traps designed to catch out opposing armies. Local accommodation is basic guest houses offering decent basic facilities with local food. It is possible to catch the overnight sleeper from Beijing and wake up to Pingyao in the early morning.
