Demonstration against imperialism and war in San Francisco, 1929. Charlotte Anita Whitney, member of the Socialist and Communist Party, on an anti-imperialist demonstration before the Chinese Embassy in San Francisco. On the banner that is held by Anita Whitney, the date of August the 1st is named the day of resistance against imperialist war. On other banners is emphasized the solidarity with the Communist Party and Soviet workers and peasants. Anita Whitney and nine other demonstrators were arrested. The cause of the demonstration was the ongoing conflict between China and the Soviet Union on the joint administration of the Chinese Eastern Railway. The railway line runs through both states. On 17 July 1929 the Soviet Union had broken off the diplomatic relations with China. Then starting 15 August there were fights on the Soviet-Chinese border. On 21 November an armistice was concluded.
