Adriaen Brouwer (born Oudenaarde, c. 1605 – died Antwerp, January 1638) was a Flemish painter active in Flanders and the Dutch Republic in the first half of the 17th century. Brouwer was an important innovator of genre painting through his vivid depictions of peasants, soldiers and other 'lower class' individuals engaged in drinking, smoking, card or dice playing, fighting, music making etc. in taverns or rural settings.[4] Brouwer contributed to the development of the genre of head or facial studies, investigating varieties of expression. In his final year he produced a few landscapes of a tragic intensity. Brouwer's work had an important influence on the next generation of Flemish and Dutch genre painters. Another very similar version of this painting is in the Pinakotheken | Museum Brandhorst, Munich. They claim they have the original but paintings by Brouwer where much copied and if this version is a late 17th century version, then it is a quality copy by an exceptional artist. Interestingly, the colours used in this version match well the colours used by Brouwer in the painting of the Tavern scene in the National Art Galler, y London where as the Pinakotheken does not.
