Sucre is the most beautiful city of Bolivia, situated at 2790metres above sea level on the eastern edge of the Altiplano. It was the centre of colonial Spanish power and was made the capital after independence, a status it still retains. It has a wealth of colonial architecture and one of the oldest universities in Latin America.The main square and centre and meeting point of Sucre is the Plaza de 25th Mayo. In the centre of the square is Statue of Antonio Jose de Sucre an independence hero and the first Bolvian president whose name the city bears. The cathedral and Prefectura are the major buildings facing onto the Plaza.
