Wat Mai Suwannaphumaham is one of Luang Prabang’s largest and most richly decorated Buddhist temples and one of the few to survive the the destruction by Chinese Haw bandits from the Black Flag Army in 1887. The wat was founded by King Anourout and dates to the late 1700s. It served as a temple for the royal family. The magnificent gilded bas relief at the Wat Mai temple dates from the remodeling of the temple during late 1960s. The reliefs were first covered with a black lacquer and then gilded. It depicts scenes from the Ramayana, one of the largest ancient epics in world literature, the Vessantara-Jakata, an important part of the traditional folklore or the region, and the Buddha's penultimate reincarnation. At the bottom the relief contain the villages and flora and fauna of the world around Luang Prabang.
