Natural gas has been formed over millions of years through the decay of plant, marine and animal life and the gas is trapped deep under the earth in reservoirs called gas fields. It is the most environmentally friendly of the fossil fuels because it has the lowest CO2 emissions and is suitable for use both in high efficiency combined cycle power stations and for domestic heating and cooking purposes. Gas is a major source of energy in the 21st century. Supply and demand is growing rapidly, with new gas fields being discovered and exploited in many countries around the globe. The gas is transported through high-pressure transmission pipelines from gas fields or gas import terminals to major centres of population and large industrial users. These high-grade steel pipelines are designed to move the gas at high pressures over long distances through large diameter pipes to the market centres. Energy to overcome friction is supplied by pump or compressor stations spaced at regular intervals. Pipelines are a very safe, reliable, and efficient means of transporting natural gas and a key element of safety is that the pipeline is usually buried completely underground. The work is carried out by specialist contractors using dedicated pipe-laying equipment.
